“The guiding principle of PCI-SIG has always been, ‘If we build it, they will come,'” Insight “Early parallel versions of PCI technology accommodated speeds of hundreds of megabytes/second, a perfect match for graphics, storage, and networking needs in the 1990s,” said Nathan Brookwood, 64 Fellow. “In 2003, PCI-SIG evolved to a serial design supporting speeds of gigabytes/second to accommodate faster solid-state disks and 100MbE Ethernet. Almost like clockwork, PCI-SIG has doubled the PCIe specification bandwidth every three years to meet the challenges of emerging applications and markets.

“With the upcoming PCIe 7.0 specification, PCI-SIG continues our 30-year commitment to deliver industry-leading specifications that push the boundaries of innovation,” said Al Yanes, PCI-SIG President and Chairman. “As PCIe technology continues to evolve to meet high-bandwidth demands, our working groups will focus on channel parameters and reach as well as improving power efficiency.

The PCIe 7.0 specification is designed to support emerging applications such as 800 G Ethernet, AI/ML, cloud and quantum computing, as well as data-intensive markets such as hyperscale data centers, high-performance computing (HPC), and military/aerospace.”

The merger negotiations between Japan’s NAND memory giant Kioxia and Western Digital (WD) have entered the final adjustment stage, with Kioxia taking the initiative and continuing to negotiate the investment ratio.

According to foreign media reports, it has been a long and long journey, but it seems that Japan’s Kioxia may eventually merge with Western Digital in the United States, which is one of the largest M&A transactions in recent years. The Japan Times quoted people familiar with the matter as saying that the two sides are “discussing the merger business in detail” and establishing a joint venture with Kioxia as a major shareholder.

According to data from British research firm Omdia, based on the value of NAND flash memory used to store data in smartphones and other devices, Kioxia ranked third in the global market share in 2022, and Western Digital ranked fourth. Some people question why the merger did not happen earlier. There are many reasons, one of which is that the NAND market is currently in poor condition. In fact, market analysis firm Trendforce points out that global NAND revenue fell by 16% in the first quarter of 2023, with Western Digital being one of the most affected brands (-21%), while Kioxia’s decline was relatively small at 6%.

It is reported that Kioxia was formed after Toshiba sold 60% of its NAND chip foundry assets and SSD business to a consortium led by Bain Capital for US$18 billion in 2017. It is understood that Toshiba’s move was to make up for the huge losses caused by its Westinghouse nuclear power plant construction business. Kioxia inherited Toshiba’s stake in the Western Digital joint venture and has since grown rapidly. It has built a new chip foundry through this joint venture and is considering an initial public offering (IPO) in the hope of bringing more cash to Toshiba.

The merger of the world’s two largest storage companies will create a giant that can compete with Samsung, which has all the data: SSD, microSD, NAS, etc. (but not RAM yet). In other markets, this integration can go either way, but in the technology industry, it can only go one way. This will promote innovation, thereby improving performance and reducing costs. This will ultimately mean a lower price per terabyte for end users (which includes everything from consumers to hyperscalers like Facebook or Google).

This will be achieved by moving more quickly from QLC to PLC (quintuple-level cell) and adding more layers to the NAND chip. R&D is likely the catalyst for this acquisition, and Western Digital’s senior vice president of technology and strategy, Alper Ilkbahar, recently made a statement highlighting this as a choice.

At the aforementioned 3D flash launch, he said: “By adopting a common R&D roadmap and continued investment in R&D, we have been able to productize this foundational technology ahead of schedule and deliver a high-performance, capital-efficient solution.”

Western Digital is strongest in the consumer market, with brands like Sandisk, while Kioxia excels in the commercial/enterprise/automotive side (it does have an end-user product line, but is focused on the Japanese market). It is the more resilient B2B market that may insulate Kioxia from the worst financial outcomes.
